Yellow Red Blue by Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky. Yellow Red Blue. 1925. Oil on canvas. 127 x 200 cm. Musee National d'Art Moderne, Center Georges Pompidou, Paris, France.
"Kandinsky, himself once said "Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul." The concept that color and musical harmony are linked has a long history, intriguing scientists such as Sir Isaac Newton. Kandinsky used color in a highly theoretical way associating the sound's character, with saturation and the volume of sound. He even claimed that when he saw color he heard music."

Every part of the painting possesses an effective coloration which influences the tonality of the elements, that contributes to the richness of the composition. The art work is born from the inner necessity of the artist in a mysterious, enigmatic and mystic way, and then it acquires an autonomous life,  it becomes an independent subject animated by a spiritual breath. The inner necessity is for Kandinsky the principle of the art and the foundation of forms and colors harmony.
